Indicative injury compensation bands
Injury severity Indicative range (injury only)
Minor £1,000 – £4,300
Moderate £4,300 – £25,000
Serious £25,000 – £150,000 +

Indicative only, and not a promise of compensation or legal advice. Injury ranges are broad bands based on the Judicial College Guidelines; whiplash-type soft-tissue injuries from a road accident follow a fixed government tariff (currently around £240–£4,345). What you actually receive depends on a medical assessment and your individual circumstances.

How car accident compensation is worked out

A car accident claim is made up of two parts. General damages compensate you for the injury itself, the pain, suffering and loss of amenity, and are valued using the Judicial College Guidelines, the standard reference the courts use. Special damages cover your actual financial losses, and are added on top.

Special damages in a car accident claim commonly include:

  • Vehicle repairs, or the market value of your car if it's written off
  • Lost earnings for time you've had to take off work
  • Treatment such as physiotherapy
  • A replacement vehicle while yours is off the road
  • Out-of-pocket costs, from your insurance excess to travel and storage

This is why your total claim can be worth considerably more than the injury figure alone. For a deeper look, read our guide on how much compensation you could get for a car accident.

Frequently asked questions

How much compensation will I get for a car accident?

It depends on two things: how badly you were injured (your "general damages") and the financial losses the accident caused you (your "special damages"). Minor injuries with a full recovery are typically worth a few hundred to a few thousand pounds; serious, lasting injuries can be worth tens or hundreds of thousands. Our calculator gives an indicative range, and a specialist confirms the real figure.

How is car accident compensation calculated?

Compensation is made up of general damages (for the injury itself, pain and suffering, valued using the Judicial College Guidelines) plus special damages (your actual financial losses: vehicle repairs or write-off value, lost earnings, treatment, a replacement vehicle and out-of-pocket costs). The two are added together.

How much is a whiplash claim worth?

Whiplash and similar soft-tissue injuries from a road traffic accident are valued using a fixed government tariff, currently roughly £240 to £4,345 depending on how long the symptoms last. If you have other injuries or significant financial losses, those are claimed on top of the tariff amount.

Does the estimate include my car?

The injury range shown is for your injury only. The cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle is claimed separately as a financial loss, on top of any injury compensation, so your total claim can be higher than the injury figure alone.

Is the calculator accurate?

It gives an honest, indicative range based on published guidance, but it is not a promise or legal advice. Every claim is different, and the accurate value only comes from a medical assessment and a proper review of your losses. That review is free and there is no obligation.
